Making Positive Affirmations Work For You

by Anne Bellamy, Author of Using the Law of Attraction to Help The Universe Help You

Anyone who is interested in the Law of Attraction, personal growth and self-improvement will have heard of  and tried to use positive affirmations to turn their dreams into realities. Many of these affirmations look something like this:

I am happy
I am rich
I am beautiful

.....to name just a few.  While I have no problem with using these affirmations, and have in fact, extolled their virtue, many people have a hard time with the structure of the above affirmations.  It's the "I am" part that they struggle with.  Sometimes when you say "I am rich" that little voice inside your head says "No I'm not" making it difficult for the affirmation to do its good work.

If this sounds familiar to you, then I have a suggestion which will ease your way into the "I am" - ness of affirmations.  Instead of saying "I am"  say to yourself  "I feel".

I feel happy
I feel rich
I feel beautiful

or maybe "Today I choose to feel happy.  Today I choose to feel rich.  Today I choose to feel beautiful."

There's a big difference between those two thoughts, at least that little voice in your head will think so.  "I am" seems like a lie...."Where's the proof that you're rich?  You haven't got it! Ha! It must be a lie."  Whereas "I feel" doesn't need proof.  You can feel whatever you like, whenever you like, however you like.  And when you feel a certain way, the Law of Attraction kicks in, the universe responds, and how you feel will soon be your reality.  Then you'll have your proof and can start saying "I am" again.

Try it for a while and see how it feels!

Pay Attention to The Stories You Keep Telling Yourself: The Law of Attraction is Always Listening

by Anne Bellamy, Author of Using The Law of Attraction to Help The Universe Help You

Yesterday my boyfriend and I were standing on the flat roof above our living room, hammering out nails from pieces of wood that were stripped off our roof when we had it reslated.  Our house has undergone a lot of renovation in the last five years, and we're still not completely done.  We've got a scaffold up and the roof is done, the windows are getting painted. Next is the kitchen.

But what happened a few weeks ago, was that the same flat roof we were standing on, started to leak.  Boyfriend quickly got up there and put some sealent on it.  Then, a few days ago, another leak appeared at a different spot on the flat roof.  Again, sealent was quickly applied.  It was while we were standing on this roof yestereday, that my boyfriend looked at it, saw all the sealent, looked at the scaffold and sighed "It's always something with this house"

I just smiled, as I know he's getting frustrated with all the work.  I was conscious not to add to that sentiment though.  I know the stories that you tell yourself, are the ones that the universe and the law of attraction are listening to, and the ones they respond to.

Not ten minutes later, boyfriend went downstairs, came back up and said "There's a leak in the kitchen ceiling!" After much inspection and investigation, the leak was found (the toilet was filling up too much after being flushed, and the afterflow was leaking down.....don't worry, it's the clean water!)  Problem was quickly fixed (boyfriend is extremely handy) But his body language looked defeated.

So I shared what I knew about how the universe works.  He knows I'm into this stuff, and he's willing to listen, but not fully convinced.  Anyway, I told him, we have to stop making comments like "It's always something with this house" and start making comments like:

"I love this house"
"I appreciate having a home to live in"
"Isn't our garden beautiful?"
"I love the colour we painted our living room"
"Our couch is so comfy!"

We've agreed.  Appreciation for this house is the way forward.  I've started stroking the walls every day and saying "I love you" I'll let you know what happens.

What stories are you telling yourself that are, without you intending to, damaging your experiences?  What beliefs do you say out loud that get sent back to you by the universe and the law of attraction?  Watch your thoughts and words.  They have power.

Do You Take Things Personally, Or Let Them Go?

by Anne Bellamy, Author of Using The Law of Attraction to Help The Universe Help You

Last night I went to a pub quiz with my boyfriend and his co-workers.  It was a charity event, put on by his colleagues, and therefore most of the people in attendance were people he worked with.  Now, I must admit, that I'm not the best asset when it comes to pub quizzes, especially since I now live in a country that I wasn't born and raised in.  The questions generally are specific to the UK, and I'm a Canadian.  I do come in handy for the occasional "North American" questions, but aside from those, I'm not a lot of help.

It's this exact frame of mind, that, I believe brought about the events of the evening.  We ended up on a team with two other guys who, as it turned out, were pretty smart.  The problem came when the occasional questions that I did know the answer to, were asked.  My responses were handily dismissed and or ignored.  I found this quite frustrating, especially when I had to repeat my answer three, four or even five times and still they were dismissed.  Even when I explained why I knew the answer, I still had an uphill struggle convincing them.

"Name 3 of the 4 modes of transportation Phileas Fogg uses in the book Around The World in 80 Days".
Ship and train were immediately written down, and then some chin-scratching.  It was at this point I said "Elephant....elephant.....elephant.....elephant."  Finally, the guy writing the answers looked at me and said "I can't tell if you being funny or not."  I explained that I was serious, and that I had literally read the book 2 months ago.  Still, I was met with doubt.  If there is a facial expression for "pffft" that's what I got.
It wasn't until someone else said, "Actually, I think she's right.  There is a part where he's in India."  It was then, and only then, that Elephant was written down.  (It was correct)

Name the highest grossing movie of all time.  "Avatar" I said immediately.  Complete silence.  "It's Avatar."  I repeated.  Nothing.  "Seriously, Avatar"  Tumbleweeds.  The guy with the pen picked it up and inexplicably wrote "E.T".  Okay, now I like everyone's favourite alien as much as anyone, but a movie that was made almost 30 years ago is not going to still retain the title of highest grossing movie of all time, if only by virtue of the fact that ticket prices have skyrocketed since then.

My boyfriend, to be fair, believed me.  He knows what topics I'm good at and eventually said, "She knows her movies.  Write down Avatar."  Still nothing.  Eventually the 3rd guy said, "Actually, she may be right"  Still no change.  I was getting seriously frustrated and offended.  By this time we'd moved on to other questions.  Still, I kept looking at "E.T" with contempt.  Eventually that round ended and it was time to collect our answers.  I said to the 3rd guy "make him change E.T. to Avatar!"  Which he did.  (It was corret).

We ended up winning the pub quiz.  I told you, these guys were smart.  For me though, it wasn't a satisfied win.  I felt frustated, offended and insulted.  I tend to get that way when I feel my intelligence is questioned.  All the way home, I had a bitter taste in my mouth and was directing my anger at the guy writing the answers.
Now, I'm a big fan of the law of attraction.  I'm on board.  I believe it.  I've even written a book on it.  I know how important it is not to let our emotions control ourselves.  I know that I've got to stay happy and positive.  So, I woke up the next morning with a different outlook.  I was busy blaming someone else for how I was feelng, but really, didn't I bring this all upon myself?  I mean, look at the first paragraph I wrote in this post.  I brought the energy myself, that told them "I'm not very good at pub quizzes"  No wonder I was questioned!  I took their reactions to me personally, when I should have let them go.  If I hadn't been offened then their reactions to me would have changed.  I had only myself to blame.

Do you take things personally when people don't treat you the way you want them to treat you?  Do you hate it when you feel disrespected?  Maybe it's time to look at your own actions and belief systems.  It's a hard lesson to learn.  Believe me, I know.  But I also know, that in order to bring more positive things into my life, I've got to let go.  Stop blaming other people.  Stop looking backwards and start looking forward.

Bring on the next pub quiz!  I'm ready for it!

17 Tips to Double Your Productivity in 14 Days by Robin Sharma

by Robin Sharma:

I wanted to share 17 of the tactics I've learned that I know will help you lean into your productive best in this age of dramatic distraction:

1. Turn off all technology for 60 minutes a day and focus on doing your most important work.

2. Work in 90 minute cycles (tons of science is now confirming that this is the optimal work to rest ratio).

3. Start your day with at least 30 minutes of exercise.

4. Don't check your email first thing in the morning.

5. Turn all your electronic notifications off.

6. Take one day a week as a complete recovery day, to refuel and regenerate (that means no email, no phone calls and zero work). You need full recovery one day a week otherwise you'll start depleting your capabilities.

7. The data says workers are interrupted every 11 minutes. Distractions destroy productivity. Learn to protect your time and say no to interruptions.

8. Schedule every day of your week every Sunday morning. A plan relieves you of the torment of choice (said novelist Saul Bellow). It restores focus and provides energy.

9. Work in blocks of time. Creative geniuses all had 2 things in common: when they worked they were fully engaged and when they worked, they worked with this deep concentration for long periods of time. Rare in this world of entrepreneurs who can't sit still.

10. Drink a liter of water early every morning. We wake up dehydrated. The most precious asset of an entrepreneur isn't time - it's energy. Water restores it.

11. Don't answer your phone every time it rings.

12. Invest in your professional development so you bring more value to the hours you work.

13. Avoid gossip and time vampires.

14. Touch paper just once.

15. Keep a "Stop Doing List".

16. Get up at 5 am.

17. Have meetings standing up.

Stay Productive and Make Your Work Matter!

Kindest regards,

Robin Sharma
